“Damascus Countdown” by Joel C. Rosenberg – Heroes of Prevention

Damascus Countdown by Joel C. Rosenberg (Book cover)
In my opinion (and probably that of many others) some of the greatest heroes to ever grace to Earth will remain unknown until the end of time, for their heroism lied in the prevention of some kind of catastrophe, rather than retaliation or repair.

In Damascus Countdown by Joel C. Rosenberg, we follow the story of such a hero, one whose deeds may make him one of the greatest people to have ever lived on Earth.

It begins as Israel launches an air strike on Iran, attempting to destroy all of their nuclear arsenal so as to eliminate an ever-looming threat. Such a course of action caused the Imam to command a full retaliation against the nation. Meanwhile, the United Nations are resolving to condemn Israel for such an unprovoked act of aggression.

While all of this happens, CIA agent David Shirazi has infiltrated the Iranian regime, and has discovered some troubling information: two nuclear missiles still remain and have been transported to an unknown location, and judging by everything, they are going to be launched soon. It’s now up to David and his team to take care of the bombs and save the world from a nuclear funeral.

As those who have read my reviews probably know, I’m a pretty big fan of military novels, especially one with a greater leaning towards realism.

Despite all the sensationalism of the novel, I do have to admit that it was quite Tom Clancy-like in its approach to details and description, but the story moved at a faster pace, and considering the current climate in the Middle East, the threat actually felt quite real.

The most exciting part about it, in my opinion, was that the undercover CIA team had absolutely no clues or leads as to where they warheads were taken, all while being extremely short on time.

Watching them rise up from such a situation and put all they have to the test knowing that a nuclear war is about to happen is very satisfying and will keep your eyes glued to the pages.

Regardless of what your beliefs are in regards to the current conflict raging on in the Middle East, I recommend that you put your prejudices aside and simply dive into this gripping military thriller.
